Peck!
Your nest resounds with tapping sounds, chicks ramming their beaks into the shells of their eggs.
Again.
And again.
Crack!
With a screech of satisfaction, your first chick splits her eggshell and tumbles onto the dirt. Exhausted from hatching, she flops against a nearby egg to rest. You supervise the hatching process closely. Over the next few hours, a dozen of your eggs have hatched. Not all are showing any signs of progress. You haven’t heard tapping for a while now.
You settle down and observe your surroundings. Your nest is one of a large grouping of other Hysilophodon in a valley. The valley is bordered on one side by a forest, and on the other, a river. Between you and the river, a herd of [[Diplodocus]] are feasting on [[cycads]]. Every now and then, a thirsty member of your herd weaves among the behemoths to get a drink. The Diplodocus pay you no mind in their munching.
After taking stock of what's going around you, you return your attention to the eggs.
[[Sit on them and see what happens.]]<img src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3f/Dinopark_Plze%C5%88.JPG" alt="Parasaurolophus" style="width:600px;height:400px;">
You and your mate take your chicks toward the river. There is not much cover, but you have a guaranteed source of water. You find a pile of stripped cycads left behind by the Diplodocus. It’s a meager shelter, but it’s enough for your chicks to hide.
The following day, you and your mate lead the chicks toward a clump of ferns near the water to forage. You see a couple of [[Parasaurolophus]] already on the bank, so you know that the area is at leastly somewhat safe. You keep a wary eye for predators as the chicks feed. They’re constantly hungry, their growing bodies demanding energy.
After a while, your bellies are full, and you move on down the riverbank. They take no notice as you walk with them, relaxing your vigilance now that you’re protected.
On your way, you hear a rustling behind you. Fearing it's the Troodon, you make yourself ready to run or fight.
[[Here it comes]].
<img src="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQHjvjzc_tf3VUayVZB4gHB3xkswKOYpQtDyi-OUWa0rc_8kmVo" alt="Forest with ferns" style="width:700px;height:500px;">
You and your mate take your chicks into the forest, where the thick undergrowth hides you from the Troodon. You need to find shelter. A nearby cave looks promising. However, you can smell that another animal’s been here recently.
[[Check to see if it’s empty.]]
[[Try to find a hollow tree]] instead.
<img src="http://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/01/85/12/1851206_1961a703.jpg" alt="FOrest Cave" style="width:600px;height:500px;">
Your mate investigates the cave. He enters slowly, sniffing the air and looking around cautiously. After a minute, he comes back and chirps at you reassuringly. The cave is empty and safe. You and your family nestle into the space, which is surprisingly cozy.
After checking the cave thoroughly yourself to ensure that the previous occupant is not coming back, you settle down with your young to sleep through the rest of the day and night to recover your strength.
The next morning, you and your mate guide the chicks in the direction of the valley, hoping to link up with the rest of the herd. You keep a wary eye out for predators but can’t resist the urge to forage as you go. The chicks are constantly hungry, their growing bodies demanding energy.
When you get to the valley, you hesitate at the edge.
[[Go ahead.]]
[[Wait and watch first.]]<img src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b8/Burrow_-_panoramio.jpg" alt="Burrow in a forest" style="width:600px;height:500px;">
You and your mate take the chicks deeper into the forest, away from the burrow. After several minutes of running, you manage to find a tree that has rotted away inside. It's only big enough for your chicks, so you and your mate lie down exposed. You and your brood try to get some much-needed rest; your stamina only last so long.
Unfortunately, just as you are about to fall asleep, your mate smells the Troodon approaching from upwind. You and your family make a run for it, but the predator is far faster than you and catches up to you.
Your mate turns and kicks at the Troodon. The predator is enraged, and it tussles with your mate. Your chicks shriek in terror. You squawk and join the fray, and for the next few seconds it's all dirt and blood and scales and claws.
After the short scuffle, the Troodon breaks free and runs, deciding that he's had enough of such difficult prey. You and your mate are left with scratches and a bite mark or two, but you'll recover. However, it is now more important than ever that you get back to your herd. In your weakened state, you won't be able to fight off another attack.

You panic and bolt, trying to avoid the massive feet around you. You and your mate use your long legs to swiftly dodge and duck to safety, but your tiny chicks aren’t so lucky. You have lost them.
You and your mate have failed this year, but next breeding season you can try again.

You walk into the open, your chicks trailing behind you. There are no dinosaurs in sight, but you keep moving into the open, hoping to find tracks or scent.
Leaving cover was a mistake. The earth shakes under pounding footsteps. You look up to see an [[Allosaurus]] bearing down on you. He had been trailing the Diplodocus herd, and now he’s found food. And thanks to your fight with the Troodon, you and your mate smell like blood. You and your family run. In the mad rush to escape, your mate trips on a branch and stumbles. There’s no time for him to get back up, and the Allosaurus closes in for the kill.
You lead your chicks away from the carnage. After some time, you realize that there are Hypsilophodon footprints mixed with the Diplodocus. You speed up, and soon the Diplodocus herd comes into view. They take no notice of you as they continue on their migration. The Diplodocus crests a hill, and you see your herd ahead. Relieved, you and your chicks reunite with your herd and follow the Diplodocus migration in safety.
You made it, but it’s a bittersweet success. You lost your mate, and without him, your chances of being able to protect your young to adulthood have gotten much slimmer.

You wait and observe. Soon, the earth shakes under pounding footsteps. An [[Allosaurus]] stalks into view. He sniffs the air, but the stale scent of the abandoned nests hides your fresh scent, and he passes without finding you. You and your mate lead the chicks toward the river and pick up the trail of the Diplodocus herd.
After some time, you realize that there are Hypsilophodon footprints mixed with the Diplodocus. You speed up, and soon the Diplodocus herd comes into view. They take no notice of you as they continue on their migration. The Diplodocus crest a hill, and you see your herd ahead. Relieved, you reunite with your herd and follow the Diplodocus migration in safety. Back among the shelter of their numbers, you and your mate can rest and let your injuries heal.
Congratulations! You and your family have survived!

You and your mate take turns keeping watch and getting some sleep. This prevents you from being surprised by a [[Troodon]] ambush in the morning. The lone predator has attacked a nearby nest on the edge of the herd, unprotected. You wake your mate at the first sign of trouble and get your family woken up. The other nesting Hypsilophodons scatter.

Troodon was a small predatory dinosaur, about 7 ft. long and 90 pounds. This light body allowed them to run fast on their hind legs. Their feet possessed long claws used to slash prey. They had keen vision, potentially even night vision, and are thought to have been quite intelligent. Proportionally, Troodon had the largest brain of any dinosaur.
They are thought to have preyed on newly hatched dinosaurs and eggs, having been frequently uncovered at a site called Egg Mountain in Montana.

Diplodocus was a large herbivore of the sauropod family. It was most likely a herd animal, living on the move in search of food. Its range was in North America, primarily the western part of what is now the United States. This massive creature was around 90 feet long, with much of that length coming from its neck and tail, and weighed about 12 tons. It is renowned for having a long whip-like tail, which may have been used as a defensive weapon.
Despite its great size, Diplodocus had a proportionately small head, around 2 ft. long. It ate a variety of plants and did so by using its peglike teeth to strip off leaves. To digest this food, since it did not chew, it swallowed stones called gastroliths which helped to grind the leaves into pulp.
Diplodocus was discovered in 1877 by Samuel Williston in Colorado. The species was named by Othniel Charles Marsh (an American paleontologist famous for participating in the “Bone Wars”, a competition between himself and Edward Drinker Cope resulting in the discovery of multiple dinosaur species commonly known today; also known as the Great Dinosaur Rush). The name means “double beam”.

Hypsilophodon was a small herbivore, around 8 ft. long and 154 pounds, that ran on its two hind legs. As a slender creature with a long tail for balance, it relied on speed and agility to escape from predators. It used its forelegs as arms, having five-fingered clawed “hands” which it could use for food. Its diet may have been ferns and horse-tails, since these are the main plants in the range where it was discovered (the Isle of Wight off the coast of Britain, though it has also been found in North America). Hypsilophodon possessed a strong beak to snip plants, and behind that, teeth to chew.
Hypsilophodon nests have been uncovered with careful patterns, evidence of parental care and attention to their eggs, and presumably their young, which formed the basis for this game.
Hypsilophodon was discovered in 1849, and originally misidentified as a young specimen of the similar but larger species Iguanodon. In 1869, Thomas Huxley identified the creature as a new species, and gave it a name meaning “high ridge tooth”.

A type of plant known to have grown in prehistoric times, in fact they were so widespread that the Jurassic Period has been called the "Age of Cycads". The name is not a single species, rather it is an order that encompasses many species distinguished by cones and crowns of compound leaves.

You call out to catch the herd’s attention and run over the sandbar. However, when you get midway, you hear a roar. Looking around you see that the Allosaurus' feet are getting stuck, alond with some of the Diplodocus.
Your family has stumbled across a patch of quicksand. However, you and your chicks are light enough to dart across safely, while the massive predator has become trapped.
You rejoin your herd, and they move back into the forest, where large predators won’t fit between the trees and there is plenty of food. With the security of numbers, you and your family can finally feel safe again.
You made it!

Allosaurus was a large theropod dinosaur, about 40 ft. long and weighing up to 5 tons. It was long thought to be the largest predator on Earth, before the later discovery of larger species such as Tyrannosaurus. At first it was assumed that it was not able to chase its prey, but reexamination of remains have shown healed injuries, suggesting that it was capable of high speeds necessary to break bones from tripping. Like Hypsilophodon, it ran on its hind legs and had clawed hands, though its claws were up to 6 inches long. It had a strong neck and powerful jaws, designed to grab prey and bite off a chunk of meat with its 4-inch serrated teeth.
The first Allosaurus specimen was first discovered in Wyoming in 1879, but the bones were kept in the American Museum of Natural History’s storage until 1903, when it was finally unpacked for study. Around 5,000 bones from Allosaurus have been found at a quarry in Utah, where marshy ground ensnared, possibly when they moved in to eat trapped herbivorous dinosaurs.

You keep the eggs, settling yourself delicately onto your belly to keep them warm. Your diligence is rewarded by the hatching of your last chick. It's smaller than the others, but so far it's doing all right. You know that the rest will be duds, but with thirteen out of twenty, you've had a decent hatching success rate.
A week later, you and your mate are exhausted from constantly caring for your little ones, but you've managed to keep them all well-fed. They're strong enough that they'll soon be ready to leave the nest. Until now, the presence of the Diplodocus herd has warded off predators. The herd moved on this afternoon, having stripped the nearby cycads of greenery.
Your mate returns from yet another round of foraging and drops a mouthful of ferns for the chicks. Night will be falling soon. Your chicks lie down in a sleepy pile.

A baby [[Ankylosaurus]] lumbers out of the brush. You are immensely relieved; it's an herbivore, so it won't hurt you. The little creature looks up at you curiously, before a bellow sounds behind it. The Ankylosaurus turns and heads back the way it came, probably responding to its mother's call.
You continue on your way, and after a while, you catch up with the Diplodocus who had been in the valley, traveling on migration. Up ahead lies a flat, open patch of sandy ground, and beyond it lies a hill. Faint chirps and squawks reach your ears. It’s your herd!
As you call out to get your herd's attention, there’s a disturbance on the fringe of the Diplodocus heard. You hear roaring and bellowing, then a rumble like thunder and the earth shaking beneath your feet. An [[Allosaurus]] attack has started a stampede.
[[Cross the sandbar directly to get to your herd fast.]]
[[Go around to stick to the plants and stay near cover.]]<img src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6d/Troodon_-_JuraPark_Baltow_%282%29.JPG" alt="Troodon head" style="width:600px;height:500px;">
You plant yourself in front of your nest and bellow defiance at the Troodon. It looks at you, shocked. You snap your beak threateningly, and stretch your arms out wide to make yourself more intimidating. Your mate catches on and joins the display.
You're a bit bigger than the Troodon, and much heavier. The baffled predator doesn't know what to make of food that fights back, and he turns and runs off.
You squawk in victory, echoed by your family. Unfortunately, the rest of the herd has bolted, and in the heat of facing the Troodon you didn't see which way they went.
The chicks are old enough to leave the nest, and you're ready to go find your herd.

Ankylosaurus was a North American herbivore. It could be up to 33 ft. long and 5 tons. This creature had a heavily armored upper body, even so far as to have plated eyelids! Its short and stocky legs kept its center of gravity low, because its soft belly was vulnerable. but a vulnerable belly. If a predator could flip it over, it would be defenseless. However, the predator had to get close enough first. Ankylosaurus’ main weapon was a heavy bone club at the tip of its tail that could shatter a predator’s shins. This dinosaur was much too heavily built to run, so it was designed to hold its ground and fight.<img src="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5f/Dinosaurios_Park%2C_Parasaurolophus.JPG" alt="Front view Parasaurolophus" style="width:600px;height:500px;">
Parasaurolophus was a fairly large North American dinosaur, about 33 ft. long and weighing nearly 4 tons. It had a hollow crest on the top of its head which aided in loud vocalization. Its face had a duck-like bill that it used to eat plants. It likely spent most of its time on all fours, but could run on its hind legs if needed. Its tail was unusually, since it was vertically flat. Paleontologists speculate that it may have had bright markings for display or communication.
